Yoga, Health & Wellness Day! Part 1 – 8/29/15

This event, my yoga, health, & wellness day, was entirely a dream idea for several months. That is, until I met Audra who did a drop in a couple months ago, and talked about hosting a yoga class at our gym. This is something I had been wanting to do for a LONG time, and with her enthusiasm and connections, and my persistence with Russ to make it happen, he finally agreed to let me put something together.

To be honest, I didn’t think it would be successful, and I’d hear the usual “I told you so! People don’t want that stuff!” sort of response, but this time around, he let me run with it, and with Audra’s help, we secured an amazing instructor named Dan Nevins, who’s also a Wounded Warrior and a double amputee as a result of injuries sustained during the war.

To build on top of this, I said hey, let’s have some of our local businesses come in and showcase what they do. These can be members of our own CrossFit community, members of our surrounding Jax Beach community, etc. I started making phone calls and sending messages on facebook. I got suggestions from friends at the gym as to who would be a good addition to our wellness day, and blindly reached out to them to see if they’d be interested in coming.

To my surprise, people started responding. And they wanted to do this!! They were agreeing and they were loving the idea! I was feeling the excitement of getting a bunch of good people together to hang out and share what they do. But what if people don’t show? Oh God, what if it’s just the vendors?

Dave suggests hosting a raffle too. So again with my emails and messages, hey… can you donate? Will you donate? We’re selling raffle tickets now! Wait.. who does the raffle benefit?! Wounded Warrior, yes!! That would be good!! Wounded Warrior was already being represented at the event with Dan teaching Baptiste Power Yoga, so why not?? Let’s invite more warriors!!! So.. Casey and Isla, two adorable people who also work with WWP, arranged to have a table as well as a few Warriors come out to share their stories and to be a part of the event. WHOA.

The donations start piling up. From my post on Facebook:

Crossfit Total Control is donating a free month of Fundamentals classes to any new sign up!
Mór Culture is donating a 4 week supply of flavored kefir water (16 bottles! A $60 value!)
Cognito Farm is donating a $50 gift certificate!
Popwell & Stalnaker Chiropractic Center is donating a new patient consultation, exam and x-rays, a $170 value!
Dali Wall Decals is donating a $100 gift certificate!
lululemon athletica Jacksonville is donating a yoga mat and strap, an $86 value!
Lianne is donating a bag of P96 vanilla shakes and Ease cream, a $77 value!
Soapforathletes by Trails Natural is donating a gift basket of soaps and bath bombs, a $50 value!!
Audra Robinson is donating a doTERRA athlete’s kit, a $100 value, and 2 doTERRA wholesale memberships (each a $35 value!)
Andrea V. Danti is donating a new acupuncture patient consultation and follow up, a $150 value!
Robeks Fresh Juices & Smoothies is donating five $15 gift cards!

Brian Anderson from The Anderson Performance and Longevity Clinic donated a full patient evaluation. Mike from Jax Sports donated a bunch of goodies! Tyler Brunner donated 2 photo shoots with edited photos too! It was just amazing to see all these good people donating their services and products to help raise money and bring people in.

Then the day before the event comes along and I start to panic again. OMG what if people don’t show up? What if it rains? I’ll post! It can be all inside! We’ll be fine. HOLY SHIT what if DAN doesn’t show up??! Will I have to teach a yoga class?? Oh god no, I’m definitely not ready for that! The voices in my head just spewed negativity and what if’s, and… there was nothing I could do about it except hope that all went well.

Let’s not forget the small detail that Audra had some crazy reaction and had to go to the hospital. I literally never saw this poor girl the entire time EXCEPT for when I drove to the ER to sit with her and take her snacks, late Friday night before the event. She ended up being diagnosed with Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. She never left the place she was staying, from Tues-Fri, except to go the ER and to go back. She couldn’t even make the event. I felt so bad!! We kept each other updated on the events and happenings, and thank God I drove downtown to see her, or I wouldn’t have had a chance to visit with her at all before she flew home. Crazy girl. (and yes, she’s okay!!)

The morning of, Dave and I came in early and got our tent set up for the raffle tickets. He and I had also come in the night before to set up the speakers and whatnot (THANK YOU DAVE!) and to make sure the sound was all good to go. Vendors started pouring in to set up their stuff, and wow, they knew what they were doing! They didn’t need help or direction or to be told what to do, it was amazing. The floor plan I sent out worked, the leadership I maintained was respected and admired, and people actually treated me like I knew what I was talking about. What?! I was running around freaking out, hanging up banners, planting yard signs, and just generally panicking about the day. And 9am rolled around. And people started to show. And they wanted to buy raffle tickets! And we accepted credit cards! And cash! And they wrote their info down like they were supposed to! WHAT. I can’t believe this is all HAPPENING. And music was playing, and people were talking, and things were moving. I had actually pulled this off!!

to be continued….

Crossfit Day 511 – Bring a Friend Day & Neck Pain Update – 8/28/15

Neck still hurts, but it’s just a slight pain now, and only really when I turn my head far left or far right. My mobility is back, yoga hasn’t helped (or maybe it has?) But whatever. I’m not sleeping well, which really sucks. Even ZMA, my magic sleeping answer, hasn’t been working, so I’m monumentally frustrated. AND. I have a giant event coming up that I’ve been planning for weeks at the gym!

Also. I’m starting to feel this weird skin sensitivity on my left arm. On the top of my left hand, on the underside of my forearm closer to my inner elbow, on the back of my arm by my tricep, and right above my elbow along the back. W. T. F. There’s no redness, no muscle soreness, no weakness. Just this weird sunburn-y, scrape-y feeling. I don’t even bother with Googling because how the hell do you google that? Right. Everything from B12 deficiency to neurological disorders came up. Nevermind. I’ll carry on with my days. and take some B12 for good measure…

Anyway, the WOD!

5 rounds for time
15 wall balls (20/16) I USED 20lb!!
20 S2O (95/65) I used 65
35 DUs (singles)

I finished my 5 rounds in 14:46 and I was super psyched that I used a 20lb wall ball! Felt good to push myself with that.

Crossfit Day 510 – 8/24/15

After PRing your deadlift, it’s kinda difficult to ruin your day. I went on to do the day’s WOD after all that excitement. It was the following:

21 min emom
1 : 15/12 calorie row
2 : 10 burpees over bar
3 : 5 thrusters (135/95)

I finished all 21 minutes, which gave me an RX for the wod!

DEADLIFT PR – 8/24/15

I haven’t PRed my deadlift in YEARS. As in, back in the old gym years. So naturally, I didn’t think I’d do it today either. I went in early for deadlift work with Bre, with the intention that we’d do the WOD afterwards, too.

I pulled 315, which I was excited about! I hadn’t done that in a long ass time!! And then I went for 345. A 10lb PR for me. I pulled, and missed. Noooooo.. So defeated!!! Tom says from across the room, “you didn’t want it enough. If you wanted it enough, you would’ve gotten it..”

Which of course pissed me off and it’s what he was trying to do. So I asked if a belt would help, because I’ve never DLed with a belt (or done anything with a belt for that matter). I went over, strapped one on nice and tight, and then… I fucking picked it up.

Sorry. I’m an idiot and I don’t know how to embed larger than 100mb videos, so click the link. It’s worth it!

Crossfit Day 509 – 8/21/15

I still hurt, but I’m still coming back. Today we had resisted push ups, which I didn’t want to do. I did regular push ups instead. Totally cool.

First we had a bunch of strict and kipping pull up drills. I did like, a fraction but I still did some. I wish my hands were stronger/tougher, and you know, I was 50lbs lighter..

WOD
15 min amrap
10 resisted push ups (reg)
ME ring rows

I did 80. Sweet.

Crossfit Day 508 – Did someone say max shoulder press? – 8/19/15

So yeah, what do I do when I hurt myself? My muscles are sore, I can’t really turn my head, that sort of thing.. I go back. For more. I always go back for more. Because if I don’t, I feel like absolute garbage. Mentally, physically. I just, need to do something with my body.

So I figured this would be a safe one. No turning, no heavy squats, whatever.

5 sets of ME bench press (225/100)
followed immediately by ME shoulder press (45/35)
*rest as needed*
then
4 min amrap
5 ball slams
7 kettlebell swings
rest 1 min
4 min amrap
7 ball slams
10 kettlebell swings

RX of course. First set of scores, bench and shoulder press. 39/102
and the amraps totaled 172 reps. RX bitches.

Crossfit Day 507 – The Day we Hurt Ourselves – 8/17/15

The worst part about hurting yourself is not knowing how exactly you hurt yourself. There was no particular moment where the hurt happened, it just.. started happening. And it was well after the workout. I had nothing to go off of. Sucked.

The WOD:
12 min amrap
200m run
5 strict burpees
10 push press (135/95)
15 deadlift (135/95)

So.. I RXed this shit. All the way down to the running and strict burpees.  Planky plank legit push up burpees. They were actually pretty great, because I personally couldn’t bang through them, so they didn’t wear me out. Yes, please!

200m run, yes I ran! Wow..

The push press at 95 was actually a little difficult for me, but I did it anyway. I’m used to jerking when the weight gets a little heavier, but jesus, my push press PR is like I dunno, 50, 60? 70? lbs more than this. What’s the problem? Whatever.

And the DL weight was a joke. EASY PEASY.

So of course I hurt myself. How? No idea. But after the WOD I felt a tightness in my left trap, sharpness around the left side of my spine, down to my shoulder, so awesome. There was nothing I could do except wait it out. It got so tight that I couldn’t turn my head very far left or right, and any weight on that part of my spine (hanging my head a certain way) was sharp and excruciating. Sleep was also lots of fun, as every time I moved, I obviously had to bring my head with me.

Here we are, I write this literally 10 or so days later and I actually still have the pain (but I didn’t stop working out.. hmm..)

Anyway, I RXed that shit. And well, you know, that’s all that matters.

Crossfit Day 506 – 8/14/15

Hey cool! Let’s do some shit we don’t like, awesome.

20 mins skill work
then
for time:
1000m row
30 overhead squats (95/65)
30 chest to bar pullups
500m row
15 overhead squats
15 chest to bar pullups

I just love OHS……

I finished in 18:17. I used a band, I did the RX weight, and I rowed. Gasser. Put rowing in a wod and it’s an instant gasser, kinda like burpees, except you never really recover from rowing. At least I don’t. And it’s not even hard! wtf.

Crossfit Day 505 – 20lb wall balls, we meet again – 8/13/15

So I mashed this one up, what a surprise.

10-1 descending ladder

wallballs (20/16)
weighted pistols (25/15)
*8 ring push-ups after every round*

I used a 20lb wall ball, I did double air squats because pistols are stupid, and I did 8 regular push ups. thug life.

So… 10 wall balls at 20lbs, 20 air squats, 8 push ups. 9 wall balls at 20lbs, 18 air squats, 8 push ups, and so on.. (8, 16, 8; 7, 14, 8……)

Yeah. 20lb wall balls are no joke, but they’re also really freaking awesome. I killed that shit. Finished in 15:05, none of it was RX, but the wall balls were RX+ so there.

Mid air during my 20lb wall ball excitement.

Crossfit Day 504 – 4 Position Complex PR – 8/11/15

I love PRs, especially when they are on movements I’m not so fond of, like… HANG SQUAT CLEANS. Really? Not a fan. I’ll do hang cleans, I’ll do power cleans, I’ll do squat cleans, but… hang squat cleans? Sigh.

1 Power Clean – 1 Hang Squat Clean – 1 Push Jerk – 1 Split Jerk

I was doing alright with this, and then I missed 155, as in I missed the hang pull. I was determined to get 155, but I really hate failing, to the point where I want to quit and be like, nevermind, I’ll get it next time (I know, that doesn’t really make sense.) My friend Bre ended up recording my set and encouraged me to try again. 🙂 So I did! And I got it. 155lbs! Highest weight for the girls that day. HELL YES. and, higher than some of the boys’ weights too. I’ll take it.

then
3 rounds for time:
50 double unders
25 toes to bar
10 clean and jerks (135/95)

I did double singles, I did 25 knees to air, (my hands thanked me) and then the 10 C&J were no big deal, those were beautiful!

I finished in 14:52. Wee!
