Monthly Update – May 2016

My training has been consistently inconsistent. I have really tried to stay in a good routine these last couple weeks, and just last week, I determined that I would work regular people hours like everyone else, regardless of what work was left for the day. This means I need to work on my efficiency, perhaps go in to the office earlier and get more done during my quiet time, and then be out the door by 5-5:30p. This allows me to go to the gym in the evening if I want to, eat dinner with Dave, watch a TV show or two, and then get to bed by 11p. Last week it worked pretty well, so I’m hoping that except for extreme install circumstances, or crazy deadlines that come up sometimes, that I can stick to that.

Today I came home around 4p, which was wildly luxurious. Dave and I had an early dinner, which was also fantastic, because it means I’m not eating at 9p and going to bed soon after. So bad!

My gym time has been 2-3 times a week, plus here and there at our neighbor’s gym, called Training for Warriors – River City. They are a CrossFit style gym, but without the dirt and grunge and nitty gritty. They have AC, no tires, no ropes, they don’t do Olympic lifts, but the body weight type stuff is very similar, as is the camaraderie. They are just starting out, and since we did some decals for them, I traded training time for installation time. Total win win for everyone!

So all in all, 4-5 times a week maybe. The TFW stuff is usually not as intense as CF, unless I make it more intense, or add in more reps. I hope they do well! They could really get a great customer base and following if people find out about them. It’s most of what people want from CF, but with AC and spotless equipment and spaces. The training and coaching is a bit more individualized, and it definitely can cater to an older population, too.

So, with my new ‘normal’ schedule happening again, I want to start blogging again. Stay tuned.

PR Update – Milestones – Life – 4/18/16

So I came to brag, and because once a month should be more than acceptable for these updates, no? I’m annoyed that I don’t make time for a 5-10 min post every evening on the days that I work out. I’m annoyed that I haven’t made this a priority, but I’m also open and accepting that I am doing what I can, and only focusing on two things:

a) things that have to get done (because nobody else can or will do them) and

b) things that I absolutely love to do.

So the A Group mainly consists of work-related activities. Things that won’t happen if I don’t sit down and do them. Also, things like, dishes, meal prep for both the dogs and myself, grocery shopping/costco/errands. I almost always wait til the last minute to do the grocery shopping part, too. I’m surprised there is always cooked and prepared food for everyone to eat. It’s to the point where I want to eat leftovers, because it means an extra 30-45 minutes spent at home in the evenings instead of elsewhere.

The B Group is comprised of things like Goddamn it, I want to read my “I don’t give a fuck” book so I will, and I’m going to sit in the sunshine for 5 fucking minutes and I don’t care what’s happening, and CrossFit, of course. I’ve made some time for Starbucks, and the sinking my toes in the sand for 10-15 glorious minutes before I rush off to do something else.

Speaking of my “I don’t give a fuck” book, let’s talk about some things I’ve learned. I also answer my cell phone less. I respond to text messages less. I say no to things I would have otherwise felt obligated to say yes to. I flat out say no. I don’t make excuses anymore, I just simply say no, sorry, can’t. *shrug* It’s liberating but it’s also very lonely. I am out for me. I am the one making sure my shit gets done. I have my killer team backing me up, but I have to take those first steps to ensure that things are properly initiated.

And speaking of CrossFit, I have some fun news! PRs. Milestones. Whatev.

Back Squat PR: 310 lbs! WHAT.

Strict Press PR: 125 lbs WHATTTT.

Fight Gone Bag PR: up from 271 to 292. WHAT.

Jackie PR: First time ever RXing. Finished in 14 magical minutes!

I also pinky swore with Gina that I’d do a full Murph this year. You know, no pressure.

There’s a C Group, I suppose. Those are the things I should do, but keep neglecting to do them. That list is so slowly getting gone through, but yeah. I will admit, the items on that list are often accompanied by a moan and groan. And with that, I have some shit to do. Adios.

Jesus, I forgot how to post here – 3/24/16

So with this crazy turn of events at the office (two long-term employees left suddenly and within a few weeks of each other) I had to really prioritize the activities in my life. Obviously maintaining our business is important, and obviously my health/fitness is important, but there are only so many hours in a day/week/month and boom. Time has flown by.

I have eliminated, ignored and pushed away the things that simply don’t matter to me. I have adjusted my entire schedule to ensure that three things happen. a) I go to CrossFit b) every email and phone call is answered, every file is set up, and every order is produced, and c) I Sleep.

I eat when I can, whether from meal prep or simply by going out to eat. I try really fucking hard to go to bed before 11p. I get up at 5a to work out, and then I work my ass off the rest of the day, sometimes into the night. Gotta get shit done and I can only ask so much of my amazing boys who have stood by my side through all this chaos. Everyone has busted their butts to make this work, and we’re killing it. Sales are insane, business is insane. I’m learning a million things and proud as punch of what I’m capable of doing now, and beaming with pride at my efficiency. I love that my boys are right there with me, learning along the way, and we’re all doing whatever it takes to make it all happen.

What has suffered? Lots of things. Friendships, free time, shopping (boo hoo), wandering around Publix or Target to kill time, blogging, reading, my tan, my dogs (probably the worst part of all this…), my phone time.

I haven’t blogged consistently in months. I quit WAG (it sucks, you can keep your high carbs and nutty macro counting, I’ll keep my high fat, low carb diet). I don’t keep my phone near me in production anymore. I simply don’t have the time or energy to focus on meaningless texts. If it’s important, email me or call the office. If it’s not important, I’ll get to it later. I have quit making plans with friends, and I have quit attending most social functions and gatherings unless they are something I really want to be a part of. I have learned to say NO. Nope, I can’t. Nope, I’m fucking busy. Nope, I don’t have the time. Sorry. Sorry, not sorry. I have shit to do and if I put it off, I’ll just have even more shit to do.

We did manage to plan a few great weekends over the last month or so. We got to go to South Florida at the end of February for Dave’s grandfather’s birthday (96!) in which almost the entire family was in attendance! The next weekend, I was able to go down and visit with April and Preston! (Dave’s sister in law and new nephew!) and his mom even made it too. It was a fantastic way to spend time with them! And then this past weekend, we somehow pulled off the trip of a lifetime, and took all of our employees and their girlfriends to Miami for Ultra Music Festival. We booked a big condo in North Miami (Aventura) and made a vacation out of it. Friday through Monday, we danced, laughed, ate, hung out, talked, shared a bunch of amazing stories and created some awesome memories. I answered the Dali phone (forwarded to my cell!) all the way down on Friday, and then shut it down when we arrived. We got right back to it Tuesday morning and everything just fell back into place.

I will make a conscious effort to blog more. I have been keeping up on my workouts, going consistently to the gym and shooting for 3-5 times a week right now. Once I get used to the 6a classes, it’s not an issue, but once I miss a couple, it’s so easy to turn off my alarm and say fuck it, I’ll go later. (That’s what I did today!) The down side is, if I say I’ll go later, I can easily just be like whoops, ran out of time, oh well. I forced myself to go tonight and I was so glad I did.

So here we go: CF Day Whatever – Small Class – 3/24/16

16.5 was announced in the middle of our WOD, but whatever, we kept going!

1000m row Buy In

4RFT

15 KB swings (55/35) I did 55lb

10 pistols (I used a band, best pistols I’ve ever done, probably)

5 Burpees

Finished in 14:24 Oh yes.

Quad City, Bitches.

Okay, I’ve waited too long to update. 2/20/16

Yeah so it’s been about 2 months now. I’m just going to throw in the towel on trying to play catch up and just note a couple of my PRs I’ve hit and exciting events since then. 🙂

2 months in review:

Back squat PR: 295 ~12/19/15

Front Squat PR: 245 2/3/16

Running 400m and then another 400m 2/9/16 FIRST TIME since I broke my foot!

I started going to 6a CF 2/2/16 with my friend Lisa. Because accountability works. I’ve been so busy lately at the office with two of our former employees now gone, that it’s been complete insanity trying to manage both of their roles mostly on my own. Thank god for my other two guys who have totally stepped it up and jumped right in to help. They are a godsend. The 3 of us together totally get it all done, and it’s really awesome, but it’s ass-busting work. By the time I’m done in the late afternoon/evening, the last thing I want to do is work out. So, if I go at 6a, there are no excuses.

I began stringing kipping pull ups together. 1/30/16 Did a set of 4, and then 3 or 4 more sets of 5.

Mom came with me! 1/30/16

My 4 year CrossFit anniversary 1/24/16

Birthday cosmo was delicious.

In a total moment of sheer stubbornness, and Dave was out of town, I moved my old king sized bed from upstairs to downstairs at our old house, in an attempt to ‘stage’ the house for buyers. Then the guy who was interested made an offer, so now we’re under contract. Fingers crossed closing moves forward without any issues! Supposed to close within the next month or so.

Enjoy the pictures. 🙂

Another Check In – 1/26/16

I am still here, still working out. I have not updated in like, two months now. I’m two freaking months behind. The good news is, the last two weeks have been some of the craziest, most stressful weeks I’ve endured in a really long time, so I’ve only worked out 3 times. My documentation shouldn’t be this difficult but I keep putting it off, which means it’s going to get worse. Maybe this weekend I’ll go sit myself down at Starbucks and spend some time working on the things that matter most to me. Love and hugs. And this picture is awesome.

What do you really want? And how badly do you want it..?

Checking In – 1/10/16

I was almost caught up. I had almost caught up!! Then.. I didn’t finish, then I let a week get in between, and another week, and another.. And here I am, over a month behind on posts. Totally my fault. We’ve been busy, and I haven’t made the time to just sit down and update my blog.

It totally doesn’t help that I’ve been going like every freaking day. I mean, it’s awesome and all, that I’ve had a fire lit under my ass to go to the gym so frequently, but it sucks when I don’t come home right away and update my site.

I will be making an effort to do this all week! I have lots to share, lots to post. I feel great, I love that I’ve been dedicated at the gym, I’ve hit some PRs, and yeah. Life is good.

Crossfit Day 543 – Starting with WAG – 11/24/15

I took some time off because I went up north to see my Mommy again! It was awesome and we had a great time, and my time with her is never enough! I also started my Flexible Dieting with WAG where you literally count and weigh every single thing you eat, and calculate your macros according to your goals. I don’t want to get into the details of it just yet, but as I progress on, I will talk about it more. I began tracking my macros and getting in the hang of weighing my food and all that, and it was a great head start for me.

The day I landed back in FL, I made sure to get to the gym. The WOD was the following:

1000m row for time
100 DU buy in
21-15-9
push press (95/65)
KB (70/55)
Burpees (I ended up doing push ups for my foot)
100 DU buy out

I PRed my 1000m row time and got 4:03.

I finished the WOD in 12:42, and it was great!

Crossfit – My Foot – 4th Metatarsal Fracture – 9/22/15

So I suffered through the weekend, Saturday and Sunday, but I had some great company! I had made plans to go see April, Dave’s sister in law, down in Vero Beach for the weekend, and I wanted to uphold our plans. I drove down, very carefully, Saturday afternoon (stopping for a bathroom break was quite the challenge) and my first time attempting to walk around in public and take care of myself. It was awful really, and just like at the gym, I’d walk and I’d have to stop every few feet and rest for a second. It’s like, my body would get ahead of itself and try to do things that had been normal, and then the sharp, shooting pain would burn through my right foot. Sigh. This isn’t getting any better.

When I got to Vero, we just relaxed, ate good food, ran (hobbled?) some errands around town. By Sunday, I was better at the whole hobbling thing, and we went to Target, Homegoods, and some really cool antique shops. Aside from that, we hung out on the couch, watched movies, and just had a good time.

You can see the swelling in my toes, as well as the top and outside areas of my right foot. I was standing with most of my weight on my left foot, too, so this was without any pressure from the floor.

Instead of driving home Sunday night, as originally planned, I stayed one more night and drove home first thing Monday morning. Driving was fine, and it was deceiving. With the seat back a little further than usual, so my foot could remain fairly pointed/unflexed for brake to gas movements, I’d relax for a bit and by this time (pretty much after the first few hours) when my foot wasn’t moving, there wasn’t any pain. So I felt normal, until I went to walk/get out of the car/stand up/get out of bed/put clothes on again, and right before my foot would hit the ground, I’d remind myself of what was really going on and I’d gingerly place the inside of my right foot down, and quickly back it up with the security and strength of my left foot. When I’m sitting, or laying down, or basically, not walking, I’m a complete human. 100% perfect. This is so frustrating!

On the drive home, I had a good 3 1/2 hours to deal with myself. I opted to call a local sports medicine and orthopedic center near our house and they were able to get me in the next morning. I was SO excited to go and get x-rays, so I could finally figure out what the hell I was dealing with here. I was told by several people that there was no way it was a break or fracture, because if it was, I wouldn’t be able to work out or walk or anything. It’s not that I wanted to prove them wrong, because I really didn’t want to deal with a broken bone here, but I have never experienced an initial pain like what I experienced on Saturday that didn’t subside after a little bit. It didn’t feel muscle-related. It was awful, and I never cry after I hurt myself at the gym. This was flat out almost hysterical crying, and I sobbed throughout the day at the intermittent pain and the thought of being broken.

That afternoon, I hobbled into the gym and did my own workout. Never miss a Monday. I’ll document that in my next CF post, though.

X-Ray time. I get in, I get scooted off to the x-ray room, turn my foot 3-4 ways, joke with the x-ray tech, ask him a few questions, and hobble back to the exam room. Doctor comes in, I explain what happened, he looks at the x-ray, looks at my foot, sees me standing, asks me to point out the pain, pokes around a bit, looks back at the x-ray, and points to a clean break right across my 4th Metatarsal. It’s the exact bone and spot where I had suspected the pain was coming from, and he verified it.

Check out that break that goes entirely across my bone! 4th Metatarsal fracture x-ray

There it was. He goes “yup. It’s broken!” I was given some good advice “if it hurts, don’t do it.” Rather, I suggested the rule of thumb and he agreed with my philosophy. He knew I had gone to the gym the day before, and I had mentioned that I would continue to go to the gym, and he didn’t flinch or bat an eye when I said that. I was like, okay so basically whatever I do, if it doesn’t hurt, it’s okay? Yup.

He also saw my shoes (was wearing my New Balance Minimus shoes.. the most comfortable by far in this whole fiasco) and really, he didn’t say anything negative about what I was already doing. Which, in my book, is super awesome. Finding a ‘professional’ who agrees with what you’re already doing is super validating and encouraging that you’re finally doing the right thing.

He did suggest an ugly velcro shoe thing to wear if I didn’t think my regular shoes were supportive enough, so I gave it a go. It was a good inch higher than my regular shoes, so walking around is rather difficult with the height difference. When I got to the car, I put my old shoe back on. Whew. So much better!

I met Dave for lunch, we laughed about my broken foot and other stupid shit, and so life went on. I also worked out on Tuesday, but that’s another separate post! Stay tuned.

Being sick sucks. 7/16/15

I came down with a sore throat on Saturday, that lasted through Sunday, and then came this mucous party in my throat. (Gross, I’m sorry.) But it was this constant coating of clear phlegm lining my throat, no matter what I did. My NAC had nothing on this shit, it sucked.

Mucous party lasted Sunday/Monday and then Tues it turned into congestion, plugged ears. So awesome. Yesterday was just a little more stuffy but no more sore throat, a lot less phlegm, and now, here we are today (7/16) and I’m pretty good. It’s just the tail end of it.

I was dressed and ready for the gym yesterday, I even left the house to go, and 5 min into my trip (half way or so!) I said screw it. I shouldn’t be doing this.

I did the same thing tonight. I got dressed, checked myself out in the mirror, and was like.. alright, let’s go! And as I walked to the door, I was like, meh. This is NOT what I want to do. My only real excuse is still recovering from whatever it is I got Saturday. I’m sure it slowed me down on Monday, and I’m sure it wasn’t the smartest thing to go, but whatever. Let’s see what tomorrow brings. 🙂

See? I was dressed and ready in my super cute new Wunder Unders but noooo…

Three Years with CrossFit Total Control – 3 Year Anniversary – 6/14/15

So my 3 year anniversary with CFTC was slightly anti-climactic, although I did put in a great WOD in honor of it! I love my gym. It probably makes the top 5 all-time favorite things in my life. If I had to actually list those things, I’d have a difficult time, but here; let’s try it anyway.

5 All Time Favorite Things in My Life (not in any particular order)
CrossFit Total Control
Dali Decals
My Family (dogs, Dave, Mom, sisters, etc, etc, etc)

omg… there’s a 12 way tie for the rest of the items.. My car, my phone, my computer, my baby blanket, my dad’s gun and knife collection, etc!

But anyway, you get the idea, so we’ll just go with CFTC is in my Top 3 All Time Favorite Things, for sure! Screw top 5.

This year has been an interesting one, as always. The day to day aspect seems rather boring, but as a whole, there are highs and lows, fun things and horrible things, great days and bad days, lots of happy, lots of sad and depressed, lots of confused, lots of feeling not so great, or hot, or amazing. I always try to be positive, and apparently it shows, because people walk up to me and compliment how positive I always am… to which I want to reply “You have no fucking idea.”

but I don’t. I’m just like “oh ha yeah thanks! Fake it til you make it!” (big smile)

My amino acid experimentation, my strengths, my slacking off at the gym, buying a new house and then moving into it, dealing with myself, my head, my thoughts, my emotions. What do I really want? Is this really what I want to do? Why do I always hurt? Why can’t I get better? Why can’t I just eat less? Then I eat less, then I feel amazing, then I’m like, oh yeah time for some fried chicken to celebrate! {resume endless cycle}

But. I’m happy, for the most part. I’m still here. I’m still alive. I’m still working out. I still show up with a smile. I still love what I do, and I will keep going back for more. I hope I can keep going til the day I die. CrossFit has changed my life, and I will say it again and again.

I am so thankful for my CFTC Family. These people make up the most amazing support team and community. I am so glad I met Russ when I did, that I walked into that gym after losing my first gym (I left) and I was challenged from Day 1.

My amazing Gym representation at Rep Your Box 4. CrossFit Total Control.

What do I want moving forward? I want more real positivity. I want real self-love, I want real self-confidence. I want real happiness and contentment with myself. I want to be okay with me at all times. I want to be more accepting of myself, of my body, my strengths and weaknesses. I want to show up more and face challenges head on. I want to tackle my problems instead of shying away from them. I want the rest of my 34th year to be fucking awesome, because I said so.
