I started strict keto – which means very low carb and very high fat, with moderate protein – after a weight loss challenge inspired by Dave’s uncles and stepdad (Richie, Alan, and Walt!) But it goes way beyond that.
Â
Last year, I did my DNA test with 23andMe and then plugged my info into Promethease which stacked up my DNA results against this huge database, and told me the various likelihoods of developing certain diseases/cancers/etc. Or as they put it “a literature retrieval system that builds a personal DNA report based on connecting a file of DNA genotypes to the scientific findings cited in SNPedia.”
Â
Right.. So anyway, I always want to know the WHYs and WHATs behind things. Why is this happening, why do I feel this way, what can I change, how is my environment influencing these things, what can I do to be proactive, how can I be better.. My results were literally ALL cancer related. Page after page after page showed increased likelihoods of cancer. So… I dove into the research. What can I do? How can I stop and prevent this from happening? Of course, the internet has been my source of knowledge and information. I found several books, and bought them all up..Â
As I posted on Facebook,
These books are my bibles. It’s not just about weight loss, and strength building, but about being proactive for my future. My whole family has been affected by cancer of various types. I’ve lost some of the most important people to me, I’ve seen what they went through to try and fight it and I don’t want to go down that same road. After doing my DNA testing with 23andMe, I downloaded my raw data and plugged it into Promethease. From there, I saw dozens of crazy results showing that based on my DNA data, I have a higher chance of developing several different forms of cancer. It sounds scary, but it motivated me to dive into the research.
Food is medicine. And poison. Food can cure and it can kill. I started searching for ways to prevent cancer by way of diet. What can I eat to lower my risk? What can I eliminate? I even searched in an incognito browser, so that my internet history didn’t skew my search results. The responses kept pointing to keto and reducing inflammation in the body.
Eliminate the sugar, the starch, the inflammation, maintain a state of ketosis, and you can theoretically starve the cancer cells. I’m hoping that by starting early, I have a better chance of preventing it before it starts. I suppose we’ll see.
I am halfway through Keto Clarity, and I just started the last one, Tripping over the Truth. I’m only a few pages in and it all clicks and makes sense to me. I am excited for my health. I am excited to see how I can solely, personally fix my future. Can I prevent my own cancer from happening?
So, I posted earlier that I had signed up for my CF L2 in Salt Lake City at Ute CrossFit Downtown. I was nervous as all hell, didn’t know what to expect, what to do, if I would get through it, and all that nonsense. I finally got some peace of mind from Russ, and he told me to basically just enjoy it. There was no test, just go and learn some great things and have a good time. That was all well and good, til I started freaking out again the day before we were supposed to leave. Then my awesome friend Angela texted me and in short, said, get your shit together. Suck it up, it’s going to be awesome. So that’s what I did.
We had a lot of lecture time, but also a lot of group time, as well. We spent hours going over properly teaching and coaching methods, hands on training, principles, movements, scaling, writing WODs, programming in general, setting up classes. I loved it. I was completely nervous teaching my own group, where I chose to teach both Push Jerk and Push Press (separately), but in the end, I was able to smooth it out and talk through and demonstrate the transitions and steps of the movements.
I had 4 great trainers to guide me through the weekend. Eric O’Connor and Doug Zakaras, from CrossFit Park City, (fun fact, this gym was the first CF box in Utah, and is owned by Chris Spealler! Michele Mootz, one of the original CFers from CrossFit Aptos (she’s been doing CrossFit for 13 years!!) and Adrian Conway, a CF Games athlete who is interning to become a Level 2 Trainer.
All in all, a great weekend. I’m so glad I did it! Will I go on to be a trainer? Maybe someday. I do enjoy helping others. I would love to coach, and I’d love to be able to impact so many people’s lives who have already taken that first big step into the gym. Showing up is half the battle!
Anyway. Time for some photos. What a great experience!
My new soul sister. We got to bench together!!Our awesome L2 Group! My L2 Trainers and me!It’s so pretty!! My CrossFit Level 2 Certificate
So this I think is some of the worst blogging in my history.. The past year, really, past 13 months or so, have been some of the busiest, most trying months of my life. I know I’ve posted about it before, but it’s really like.. I’ve completely had to re-arrange my priorities. I am doing so much at the computer now at the office, that the only thing that happens when I come home is coffee and then gym time. After CrossFit, I come home, eat dinner, and watch TV and relax for the remainder of the evening. If work needs to get done, more work is done. The last thing I want to do is sit at the computer some more and dick around. Wasting my life away.
So.. I am here, living my life. Doing the best I can. I’ll be around. I’ll post monumental updates. Perhaps I should make more time for Starbucks and laptops. That’s where the magic happens, anyway.
Fun fact: Did you know? I started keto about a month ago. This is me blowing out my birthday candles.. I didn’t have one single bite of this dessert. Dave ate it. I have been solid at it for about a whole month now, with zero cheats. That’s something to be proud of.
A month ago, I took an at home stress and hormone test and sent it in for results. You take samples of your saliva throughout the day at very specific times, and they process your results from the data.
I got my results back a couple weeks ago, and a few things on the results were quite alarming. I keep going back to my results, looking at them, and then diving in on Google, looking for answers and information.
I have an estrogen/progesterone imbalance, which is indicative of Estrogen Dominance
I have incredibly high DHEA levels, like off the charts high, and I don’t even know what to look for here.
Hormone Interpretations:
Progesterone to estradiol (Pg/E2) ratio and reported symptoms are consistent with estrogen dominance.
Note: The laboratory test system does not measure the progestin associated with the Mirena IUD.
The high DHEA and testosterone are suggestive of PCOS or metabolic syndrome (insulin resistance),
although exogenous exposure cannot be excluded. Serum vitamin D, fasting glucose and insulin testing
may be warranted.
AM cortisol level appears adequate, although reported symptoms are consistent with adrenal gland
dysfunction.
I have a Mirena IUD, so they’re not sure how that might be swaying the results. But I have run into the term Estrogen Dominance before. I must have missed this part in my reading, and skipped right to the high DHEA part. I’ve been searching high and low for answers, but most of the results are about low DHEA, and how it relates to stress. High DHEA is hard to find information about, and most people who take performance enhancing drugs have high DHEA. I don’t take anything performance-enhancing. I’m lucky if I can function in a way that passes for mostly adequate most days.
I also have high testosterone.. I am attributing this to weightlifting and CrossFit, and I’m not so concerned about this one.
I tried looking up PCOS, as well as metabolic syndrome or insulin resistance, and I highly doubt I am pre-diabetic. The symptoms I have found don’t add up, although the excess weight around my mid section are indicative of this, as well as symptoms of high cortisol levels. However, when I read things like:
The insulin resistant condition is rooted in the metabolic effects of a high carb diet in combination with a lack of exercise. Weight gain is a symptom of insulin resistance, rather than a cause. Carbohydrates are foods which contain either some form of sugar or starch, or both.
It doesn’t make sense. I don’t have a lack of exercise, and I am pretty good about my diet right now. I’m appalled by added sugar in foods, and try to avoid it whenever possible. So… I’d like to move on beyond that.
Here are some typical complaints from patients having estrogen dominance:
My breasts are swollen and getting bigger.
I can’t put my rings on my fingers.
I am more impatient now than ever.
People tell me I am too bossy. I am getting cramps again like when I was younger.
I no longer get my period.
I miss my periods regularly.
My periods come irregularly. I get scared when I see large clots during my period.
I have Pre-Menstrual Syndrome (PMS). When I get a hug, my breasts hurt. I have fibroids. I have endometriosis. I cannot fit into my shoes. I have a cyst in my breast.
I feel tired all the time.
and I also found these symptoms on another site..
decreased sex drive headaches
mood swings
weight gain
hair loss
cold hands or feet
feeling tired or lacking energy
trouble sleeping
So yes… Maybe? Sounds like it could be? I found another piece of information relating to the reasons behind why I may have this Estrogen Dominance thing. Xenoestrogens.
Sounds super sketchy and like I’m pulling shit off the internet. Well, yes.
Xenoestrogens are quite simply, environmental estrogens, usually from toxins such as pesticides.
And now, a list of several common reasons that create or produce these xenoestrogens.
Things such as Commercially raised meats such as beef and poultry. Have I been eating organic meat lately? Nope. I completely fell off the organic meat bandwagon, and now I’m pissed about it. Not only am I supporting the commercial farming industry all over again (except for pork, I still won’t eat it..) but now it could be affecting my health on a grand scale.. I’m pissed.
Commercially grown produce. Again, that shit’s covered in pesticides. Billions of pounds of pesticides are used on our fruits and vegetables every year. This is awesome.
Petrochemical compounds and Industrial Solvents. What are these? Creams, lotions, soaps, car exhaust, almost all plastics, glues, nail polish, paint removers. Adhesives. Lawn spray and herbicide treatments, fertilizers. Cleaning products. Well this fucking sucks because I work in the graphic design and print industry. We print shit and make murals and decals for a fucking living. Using solvent inks and vinyl, with adhesives. Not much I can do about this unless I tell Dave adios and abandon ship. Not likely.
Hormone Replacement Therapies.. These don’t apply to me but it’s relevant to note. HRT without progesterone added in (to help balance the estrogen) can be detrimental to a woman’s health and well being!
Stress. Stress causes adrenal gland overload, as well as reduced progesterone production and output. This tilts the estrogen to progesterone ratios in favor of estrogen. Excessive estrogen in turn causes insomnia and anxiety, which further taxes the adrenal glands. This leads to a further reduction in progesterone output and even more estrogen dominance. After a few years in this type of vicious cycle, the adrenal glands become exhausted. This dysfunction leads to blood sugar imbalance, hormonal imbalances, and chronic fatigue. (taken from Dr. Lam’s site, as linked above)
Obesity! Technically, I am obese. By the USDA’s standards, I am obese. I do CrossFit, I eat well, I attempt to take care of myself, but I am still fat, and I am still considered obese. So great. Almost 5 years of trying to be better, and it’s a constant uphill battle.
Deficiency of B6 and Magnesium. Apparently both are necessary for the neutralization of estrogen in the liver. It’s worth noting that I stopped taking almost all of my supplements over the last several months because.. I was fine. I felt great. Well, lesson learned. When you feel great, keep doing what you’ve been doing. I started back up on my supplements last week, and hopefully my stores are being built back up.
Increase in coffee or caffeine consumption. I am pretty set on my 3 cups of coffee a day, and this list references excess of 4-5 cups a day.
Working on all these things, particularly the weight loss, but this all seems so counter productive. I keep going in circles. I want to lose weight so I exercise more which increases cortisol which exhausts my adrenal glands, and then I’m sore as shit because my muscles aren’t recovering fast enough so then I can’t work out, and then I get moody, because I’m not exercising as frequently as I should be.. and.. yeah. What the fuck.
So what am I doing today? I am going to the store, and I am stocking up once again on good, healthy foods. I am revitalizing my faith in organic meats and veggies. I’m coming home and doing food prep for the week with food that we can both eat. I’m once again, cutting out the starches and carbs that have crept back into my daily routine. It’s going to suck, but I’m hoping to be a better living example of practicing what I preach.
I need to stop worrying about losing strength, and instead shift my focus on fixing my health and eliminating some of these toxins from my diet. Whether my issue really is estrogen dominance or something else, switching back to a more strict Paleo/keto diet will if nothing else, improve my overall well being. Having more concrete reasons and answers only helps to fuel my fire and determination. Wish me luck.
My results from my saliva test for cortisol levels
So, I knew that I’d be posting about this interview with Buzz Magazine, and I knew I’d be sharing it with friends and family, and I knew I’d cringe at the video of me talking (one of those things, like people hate it when they hear their voice from the outside). But I never expected this sort of attention or response from it. I didn’t expect the texts and messages of praise and congratulations. Or the high fives and other positive notes from everyone. It feels really good that my little blog has gotten some sort of recognition, and that it is completely as a result of the work I’ve put into it. Take it a step further, and I can attribute the successes of these little achievements to CrossFit. All because I went out on a limb and tried something completely unfathomable and crazy and wild. And I loved it..
Now, I want to take a minute and address my Depression post from over a week ago. Going back and reading it, I’m like oh my god, what was I thinking?? I feel fine right now. Normal, a little stressed, kind of crazy, but overall, at peace with my life. I had a great dinner, it’s Thursday. Work is getting one, customers are happy, the dogs are happy. Life is pretty fucking awesome right this moment. I know it’s not always awesome, and sometimes I break down while I’m driving or when I’m in the middle of working from the sheer weight of everything that’s expected of me, wondering if this is really what I’m supposed to be doing. But right now, it’s all pretty damn good.
With that being said, what I wrote then was absolutely true as of then. That was exactly what I was feeling at that moment. And for me to have gotten to the point where I blogged about it, means it was really intense and very real. I remember feeling completely helpless and held hostage by my emotions. I was so worried that this time, it wasn’t going away. It wasn’t just a phase or a few bad days. It lingered and stayed with me, haunted me. IÂ know people have read the post, but I don’t know what anyone thinks about it. My first thoughts are, I hope nobody thinks I’m totally off the wall when they read this.. and then I go on to think, well, if I’m feeling this way, then others have to be experiencing this, too. Maybe my posting about it will help others recognize that they aren’t so alone.
I also know that this is one of those topics that is almost completely taboo to bring up in discussion, and that’s fine. It’s a very private, personal experience that most of us aren’t comfortable with sharing. I sound like I’m all big time expert on this shit, but I’m not. I’m just really relieved that I’ve made it over the hump again. I want to thank others for understanding, and for being my friends, through all the ups and downs. Life is good right now, and this is awesome.
So I never really imagined that my little website here would gain any sort of publicity or audience. Which is why I’ve been okay with discussing things of a more personal nature; up until now. I suppose I’ll have to own up to my faults and imperfections now. Which, really, I just had these thoughts this morning. We spend so much time making sure everything looks perfect, or perfectly messy, or simple and easy, but nothing is any of those things. It came up in my mind because I was stressing over how I’d look on camera, and people’s perceptions of me on camera vs in my pretty and perfect pictures that I post online, and I said fuck it. It is what it is. This is me. I am strong and capable, and knowledgeable, and this is who I am. This is what the world gets! (this sounds so horribly cheeseball…) I could use some improvements, but we’re not perfect, and if you read anything about anything on here, you’ll know about my flaws, and faults, and good days and bad. I strive to be better, but perfection is never in the cards. I strive to be happy, healthy, and content. (and really strong)
Backing up a bit…. Last week, before the storm, I was contacted by a local news publication that is known for its weekly coverage on local events, features, and everything Jacksonville. They do articles, reviews, best ofs, and so on. They are the publication I pick up every time I go to certain restaurants so I can catch up on what’s going on here in Jax. When they contacted me, I assumed it was for advertising, or some sort of scammy thing, and I was completely skeptical.

I responded, got some more info, panicked, and of course agreed. How cool! I didn’t think that my blog would get any sort of traction anywhere, but it was mentioned that I’m one of the very few maintained health and fitness blogs locally, and that’s an honor! I know I have great weeks and bad months, in regards to posting and keeping everything updated. This has definitely been a wake up call to keeping my posts up to date. We’ll see how long that lasts. 😉
Also, complete coincidence! My longtime Facebook friend (and reader of my blog, what’s up Stacey!!) Actually works for the parent company of Buzz, Client Focused Media. When I found this out, I thought, ohhhhh so this is how they found me! Great, thanks Stacey.. exactly what I wanted to do… a video feature.. But no, she says she had nothing to do with setting it up, that it was total coincidence, so I’ll take it! Love this girl.
CrossFit Sister Stacey!

For as long as I can remember, I have always been sad with bouts of happy sprinkled in. The happy parts never last, and the sad parts always creep back in. I have happy memories, but for every happy memory, I have hundreds of sad ones. Memories of being hurt, rejected, ignored, passed over for other, cooler friends. Being forgotten about, brushed aside. Slighted. Used. Taken advantage of.
I can fake it. I can pretend that life is fucking perfect, but it never has been. It should be. I have everything I could possibly want.
—– Got up and took two GABA —–
I have been on anti-depressants, which I’ve hated and refuse to go back on. I have been to therapy, which sucked. I have tried changing my outlook, my attitude, but it always creeps back up. I have taken up various types of routines, workout regimens, diets, and while I’d say the more rigorous workouts and cleaner diets tend to have the best results, I am still sad.
I can blame hormones, but if I chart it in the calendar, there is no rhyme or reason to it. No hormonal explanation. I have done this for years, and just dealt with it.
All the way through high school, through college, through being a teacher, through being fat, then thin, then fat again. I have always been sad. I smile for all my pictures, I feel good when people are excited to see me, but I also don’t want to let anyone in. Every time I let someone in, I get hurt. Or they end up being a clingy, crazy friend which I feel like I have to sever ties with. Or I just can’t fully connect with them. Or, turns out they’re just being polite, and they don’t wait around long enough to listen to me speak. When I do find someone I can trust, our schedules don’t coincide. I can’t ever talk to them when I feel like I need them. I can never truly connect with others. I crave it so much, too. I absolutely desire human connection on a soulful level.
Two weeks ago, I thought it was hormones, so I let time tell. Last week, I knew it couldn’t possibly still be hormones, but I thought well maybe this month is different. And this week, same. I’m bummed. I feel like life is passing me by.
I hate prescriptions, I hate anti-depressants. Drinking makes me feel like shit. I’m so fucking sore from working out this week that I wisely chose not to go today. I don’t know what to do. My body can only handle so much crossfit for those endorphins. I’m so over yoga, even though I keep thinking I should go back and take a class soon. I know I’ll feel out of place and unwelcome though. Yoga is always a struggle for me. While I may be good at it, I never feel like I really belong. I am always an outsider.
I have never felt accepted, ever, in my life, until I started crossfit. But even crossfit doesn’t always yield the best results. 99% of the time, I leave and I feel amazing, but this week it felt good, but it was so unrewarding, even when I worked harder and pushed myself farther. I left the gym all week long still feeling like something was missing. For the first time in a long time, I didn’t feel better after a workout. It was almost a panicked feeling, because I thought to myself, well what the fuck am I supposed to do now if this doesn’t work?! How much harder can I push myself? Is this what it feels like to have my endorphins give up on me?
—– GABA has kicked in —–
I am tired of feeling like I am missing out on life, but I don’t know what else to do. I have always called bullshit on the mainstream mental health movement. I don’t believe in conventional western medicine. It hasn’t worked. It’s just a way of getting people to become dependent on a slew of prescription drugs that you need other prescription drugs to counteract the side effects for. I believe there are natural treatments for just about everything.
Maybe there is no normal. Maybe this is normal, and after 35 years, you’d think I’d fucking get used to it. I often feel like my problems couldn’t possibly be that big of a deal, compared to what others are struggling with. But goddamn it, this is my life that I need to be responsible for. Knowing that others are suffering or hurting shouldn’t undermine my own issues or struggles, as they are very real to me. And if I feel like something’s not right, I want to honor that feeling and allow myself to discover it and work through it.
I’d also like to point out that right about when my GABA started kicking in, I went from a sad and teary mess, to numb, calm, and apathetic (much more desirable to the former feeling..) I guess there’s my answer for right now.
I feel like I’m in a confessional. Forgive me Father.
I also feel like a broken record. I keep posting and apologizing for not posting. I’m thinking to reformat how I do this. I’m coming up on my 5 year CrossFit anniversary in a few months, and keeping track of my daily WODs… well, it’s really cool. But I suck at managing something that only feels like an obligation right now.
I’ve gone through so much in the last few weeks. A fast track to Hell and back. It wasn’t my Hell though, it was my Mom’s. I need to stop and spend some time and really devote a few hours to writing and updating this. So I can put it all in writing and give the story the time it deserves.
I am still here. I am still working crazy hours. I am still going to the gym. I just got home from spending a few weeks up north with my Mom and John. I am trying to find and establish my new normal. Trying to juggle my emotions from dealing with death and dying, to acting happy with customers, pretending like I care about what is seemingly now mundane bullshit. Trying to be healthy again. Trying to re-establish healthy choices. Trying to just be happy and content. Holy fuck. Trying to be happy.
When I see people I normally would have engaged in light-hearted conversations with, I turn and walk the other way. I don’t want to deal with it. I don’t want to deal with small talk or chit chat. I don’t want to be asked if I’m okay, or how are you holding up….? With big doe eyes. I’m fine. The reality is, all this small talk and chit chat doesn’t matter to me. And I’m tired of wasting my time on shit that doesn’t matter.
I just want to be alone, and work, and work out. And get shit done. I’m fine. I’m tired of crying, I’m tired of recanting the story, the series of events, the days, leading up to John’s passing.
I don’t want to argue about dimensions, or debate with customers about where their package is (thanks UPS…) The phone rings, and I cringe. The front door to the office opens and closes and I lock myself in my office, and hope that one of the boys deals with the in flux foot traffic.
I feel like this has been part of the real me all along, except I’m even more straightforward than ever before. Fake it til you make it? I don’t really care. Not right now, anyway. Maybe it’s just a phase. Maybe I’ll want to open up to people again, but right now, the only person who understands me is my Mom, and vice versa. If I’m not talking to, or spending time with my mom, then I just want to be alone. Please.
I really have no recollection of this workout, but apparently I did it because a) Facebook says so and b) my name is on the board.
I even wrote about it on FB, saying “I almost didn’t show up today, until Russell called me out.” So it’s confirmed! I did this one. I had to go because it was my 4 year anniversary with CFTC, and Russ was waiting for our 4 year picture together. Stay tuned, it’s pretty cute. Below is my post from the Facebook.
4 years ago, when I was in search of a new CrossFit gym, I walked into CFTC hoping I would find my new ‘place’. I had already had a great phone call with Russell about my previous 4ish months of CF experience, and although I was super nervous, I still held my head up, smiled at everyone, introduced myself, and did my best. I was worried I’d never find that new ‘home’ that I was looking for, that this CFTC community wouldn’t be ‘accepting any applications’ for a new member, and I’d never regain what I had once had with my first CF gym. Within a few short days and lots of smiling and introductions later, I knew I belonged. I also knew that I had just graduated to ‘grown-up CrossFit’ with CFTC, and the expectations my coaches had for me were insanely high. They all knew that if I kept trying, practicing, and working towards my goals, that I’d achieve them and keep right on going.
Joining the CFTC Family was hands down one of the best decisions I have ever made. I’ve said it a thousand times, but CrossFit has completely changed my life. I have done things I never in a million years thought I’d be capable of accomplishing. I’ve met so many incredible people who are so supportive and amazing, I’ve traveled all over to participate in some pretty insane competitions (I’ve never been a competitor!) and it has all been because of my awesome gym. I went from being depressed, obese, and unhealthy with a generally negative outlook on just about everything to being happy, strong as hell, in the best health of my life, and ridiculously positive about (almost) everything. I still have a long way to go, but I have learned that this is all a journey. We all get to choose what we do along this long road called life, and I can’t imagine mine without CFTC.
On a final note, Russ totally called me out, because I absolutely was NOT planning on doing today’s workout. But thanks to Facebook, he was reminded that this was my 4 year anniversary and we had to take a picture to commemorate it. 🙂 When I got to the gym, he ran up to me, all smiles, ready for this picture to happen. (and I wasn’t all sweaty and gross yet! You’re welcome, Russ.) So.. here’s to 4 years of hard work, sweat, tears, struggles, teamwork, laughter, awesomeness, and family. I don’t know where I’d be today without you guys!
The Lumberjack 20 is:
20 Deadlifts (275/185lbs) No idea what I did, but I doubt it was 185. My back has not been happy with DLs lately.
Run 400m
20 KB swings (70/55) I did 55
Run 400m
20 Overhead Squats (115/85lbs)
Run 400m
20 Burpees
Run 400m
20 Chest to Bar (I definitely didn’t do C2B, maybe I did pull ups?
Run 400m
20 Box jumps (24/20)
Run 400m
20 Squat Cleans (95,65)
Run 400m
I’m pretty sure I rowed or biked, more than likely I biked. This is ridiculous. This is why it’s important to keep up with my blog and check in every day when I go to the gym! I have no idea what I did here…
All over those squat cleans, but jesus. I don’t know. I need to start paying better attention. 🙂
My 3 and 4 year anniversary photo with Russ at CFTC
